Collaborative Strategic Foresight and New Product Development in Chinese Pharmaceutical Firms

We integrate insights from open innovation and collaborative strategic foresight (CSF) to theorize practice. Adopting a case-based approach, we draw qualitative two Chinese pharmaceutical firms—one private one state-owned, both engaged in new product development (NPD) projects. Focusing on how firms leverage CSF support their NPD, offer an interpretive account of the take different approaches orchestrating partnerships identify, explore, exploit opportunities for innovation. This article sheds light focal firms, through SF practices perceiving, prospecting, probing, translate ideas gained collaborating partners into action processes. Expanding shifting focus traditional inward-looking orientation outward-looking CSF, show could tap distributed knowledge embedded sources located beyond theoretical boundaries firm. argue that appropriately managed at stages NPD help companies better sense, seize, potentialities limits otherwise overlooked by competitors. reveal type ownership, unexplored factor, explains firm's (explorative versus exploitative) NPD.
